Texture (suggested grades 3 through 5)

Objectives

1) The students will view and discuss ways that artists use texture. 2) The students will cut shapes from various textures of paper. 3) The students will construct collages by using items of various textures.

Materials Needed

1) Students--glue, scissors, construction paper, papers and items of various textures 2) Teacher--picture of collage (such as "Between" by Alfonso Ossorio, 1963), demonstration project, chalk, blackboard

Introduction

1) Discuss what texture is. (Examples: carpet, tree bark, desk tops, etc.) 2) Show the collage picture. (Art History:) Tell who made the pictured collage, and when. Ask: What textures do you see in this collage? How do you think this artwork is made?

(Criticism) Ask: How does this collage make you feel? (possibly happy, confused, etc.)

(Aesthetics) Ask: Where would a work like this be displayed?

Instruction

Demonstrate how to make a texture collage, using the materials listed above.

Practice

Monitor while students make their own collages. Unfinished collages can be finished next session.

Closure

Ask: What is texture? What kinds of texture can you name? (soft, smooth, bumpy, etc.)

Student Evaluation

The students will be evaluated through questions and their finished projects.
