
Appomattox Court
House N.H.P.
In the village of
Appomattox Court House, Virginia, the Confederate Army surrendered to
the Union Army, thus officially ending the four-year war. The formal
surrender meeting between Generals Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant
took place on April 9, 1865. Three days later, Union Brigadier General
Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain received the arms and colors of the Confederacy
from General John Brown Gordon, thereby fulfilling the order for the
surrender of arms.
Appomattox Court House National Historical Park was established on August
3, 1935 and became a part of the National Park System on April 15, 1954.

Triangle"
The surrender of arms took place in the area marked by the
V-shaped brick formation to the right of the large tree in
the center of the photo. To the left in the background is
the Clover Hill Tavern.
